I usually write a story about gratitude on Veterans Day. Acknowledging that appreciation should be done every day, of course, but so should a lot of things we don’t do every day. Life gets in the way. Responsibilities pile up. We look at cats doing stupid shit on Instagram.
Which made me wonder whether those guys crawling across the beach at Normandy on June 6, 1944, sacrificed everything so we could spend what precious time we have left looking at cat videos.
Is that what we’re supposed to be doing with our freedom?
The answer is in the question, I guess. There’s no ‘supposed to be doing.’ Freedom means we get to choose. And if that’s what we choose, so be it.
‘Merica.
But maybe the best way to thank our veterans for their service in protecting that freedom is to reconsider what exactly we’re doing with it.
After the next cat video.
